Common questions about El Niño 2026–27.

Is El Niño 2026–27 definitely happening?

Yes. NOAA CPC’s September 10, 2026 update lists an El Niño Advisory and gives El Niño a 100% probability through the January–March 2027 season in its official table. The strength and local impacts are still probabilistic.

How strong could this El Niño become?

CPC says there is a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during fall and winter 2026–27. For October–December 2026, CPC gives a 75% chance of a historic event at or above +2.5°C on the 3‑month RONI. See the strength guide.

Does a very strong El Niño guarantee extreme weather?

No. A stronger ENSO event can increase confidence in typical El Niño patterns, but CPC explicitly warns that strength does not guarantee the strength of local impacts.

Does El Niño mean more snow?

Not everywhere. Historically, snowfall often increases in parts of the southern U.S. and higher terrain, while much of the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, Great Lakes, interior New England and Alaska tends to see less snow. Why can a wetter winter still have less snow?

Snow needs both moisture and sufficiently cold air. If a winter is wetter but warmer, more precipitation can fall as rain and snow levels can rise.

Is the checker really city-specific?

It uses your city or ZIP to identify a broad climate region. It does not pretend that seasonal forecasts have neighborhood-level precision. City pages add practical local context while preserving the same regional uncertainty.

Why does the planning-window selector not change every score?

The three cards are a broad cold-season baseline. The selected window changes the timing interpretation, but the site does not manufacture a separate local score when the underlying CPC guidance does not support one. Use the linked NOAA seasonal map for the exact three-month period.

Can I use this to plan a ski trip or winter drive?

Use it to choose a region or understand seasonal background risk, not to choose a specific safe date. Once your trip is within roughly a week, current weather, road, avalanche and resort information matters far more.

How fresh are the data?

The current embedded ENSO snapshot is dated September 10, 2026 and the current embedded long-lead seasonal outlook is dated August 20, 2026. The site automatically shows an update-check warning after the next scheduled CPC release date or when the ENSO snapshot becomes stale.

Does the site use AI to generate my forecast?

No. The checker is deterministic and rules-based. Some editorial drafting or site-production work may be AI-assisted, but climate claims are checked against the primary NOAA/CPC sources listed on the Sources page.
